6th Graders Take Cross-Curricular Approach to Solve World Water Crisis

Aquinas’ 6th grade students are learning about the environment and how what they do today, will impact their worlds tomorrow. More specifically, they are looking at the world’s water supply and how they can start to conserve these natural resources.

To shed more light on the topic, special guest, Mark Alemkinder, came in to talk to the 6th grade about how everyone can be an H2O Hero. Mr. Alemkinder works with Monroe County and the Rochester Museum and Science Center as part of the Water Education Collaborative, which educates the residents of the Genesee Regional Watershed of Lake Ontario about the enormous impact they have on the water quality in our area.

Mr. Alemkinder demonstrated for students with a specialized water table what happens when anything other than water goes into our storm drains. He spoke of the importance of recycling and how students can minimize their environmental impact by recycling, reducing and reusing.

AQ 6th graders will now delve deeper into the topics of Earth’s water sources and the global water crisis in their science classes, and read a book called Flush in their English classes, which deals with the issue of water pollution. Students will conclude the unit with a research paper detailing their own solutions to saving Earth’s water sources and stopping pollution.
