Girls on the Run

16 middle school students complete 5k race
On Sunday, June 10, 16 young ladies from the Aquinas Middle School participated in the Girls on the Run Heart and Sole annual 5K at Monroe Community College. Although some of the girls had prior running experience, for many of them, this was their very first 5K race.

Girls on the Run is an organization that offers a variety of programs for young girls that focus on health and wellness, team building, and confidence. The Heart and Sole training program, specific to girls in grades 6-8, consisted of a 24-lesson curriculum designed to inspire independent thinking, enhance problem-solving skills, and healthy decision-making.

Coaches Kassy Small (AQMS counselor) and Amy O’Brien (AQMS science teacher) say it was “truly a joy to work with these amazing middle school students each week.”  Both were amazed at the growth they saw in the students throughout the program and feel so fortunate to have been on that journey with the girls.

The coaches would like to extend a special thanks to Middle School Director, Bryan Mooney, for his continued support of the Girls of the Run program, and to Jocelyn Baschnagel, Melissa Clark, Elyssa Place and Tricia Sadler for assisting the coaches along the way.
