DIY Meets Education at The Makerspace Fair

The Aquinas library was host to the school’s first Makerspace Fair earlier this month. If you are unfamiliar with the term, a Makerspace is a constructivist and constructionist movement “taking the world by storm!”

It is a place where young people have an opportunity to explore their own interests; learn to use tools and materials, both physical and virtual; and develop creative projects. It’s DIY meets education. Librarian Julie Melton brought the program to AQ so that students had a space to experiment, create and have fun. The different stations included robots, K'Nex, snap circuits, sewing, origami, coloring, crafting, drawing and more.

She described the Makerspace Fair as "a huge success," with participation from many students in all grades. "They created, joined, collaborated, shared, invented, made, produced and learned, and built or invented all kinds of contraptions, crafts and gadgets that looked great, whistled, rang, or moved," said Mrs. Melton. The 6th grade science students took it one step further, discussing what they learned later in class.

Mrs. Melton would like to thank Principal Mancini and Mrs. Kilminster for supporting the idea!
