ArtMoves Exhibition & Performance - April 12

AQ collaborates with University of Rochester & four local high schools to create visual & performing art
More than 80 students from five area high schools including The Aquinas Institute, Brockport, School of the Arts, Wilson Magnet and World of Inquiry, will take part in the ArtMoves Exhibition and Performance on Thursday, April 12 at The Memorial Art Gallery (500 University Ave.).

ArtMoves is a collaborative project designed by Rose Pasquarello Beauchamp – Senior Lecturer of Dance and Movement at the University of Rochester – to empower high school participants to value their own voice and become citizens that contribute to their communities in a positive and effective way. “Most high school students can’t vote yet,” said Beauchamp. “They’re just entering this time of engaged citizenship and I want them to feel like they have a voice.”

Over the course of four weeks, Beauchamp and the students enrolled in the University of Rochester’s Dance and Movement Program worked individually with each participating high school. Using visual art, dance and theater as tools, they helped the high school students identify assets and struggles in their communities and how they can contribute to change. What they identified became the foundation for the visual and performing art that participants from all five schools created together.

These collaborative works will be presented to the public on Thursday, April 12 at The Memorial Art Gallery (500 University Ave.). Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with a dance performance at 6:00 p.m. This exhibit is free and open to the public.
