Exciting News from AQ

Investing $900,000 in capital projects
As we close the chapter on another school year, Aquinas is pleased to share with you news of some exciting projects on our horizon.

First, is the major renovation of the school cafeteria and kitchen – a project estimated to cost $500,000 and made possible by the support and generous donation from the Philip R. Wegman, Esq. ‘61 and Ann K. Wegman Family, including sons Philip P. Wegman ‘93, Andrew L. Wegman ‘94, E. Jay Wegman ‘96, and Timothy S. Wegman ‘01.

The cafeteria renovation will be completed in two phases; first, the kitchen will be completely renovated and ready for the start of the new school year, and second, due to time needed to manufacture parts of the new serving line, we will install the new serving line and equipment over a long weekend in the fall. Other highlights will include:

  • A complete gut of the kitchen and investment in new equipment, ventilation, cooler and freezer
  • Creation of a redesigned and modernized cooking and food preparation space
  • A new serving line that is more functional and customer-service oriented for prepared cold and hot food items. The lines will be the same on each side (two entrances and one controlled exit)
  • New tables and chairs
  • New LED lighting
  • Ceiling treatments
  • Wall finishes
  • Perhaps some decorative treatments intended to bring nature indoors

Second, Aquinas will be investing an additional $400,000 to ensure the campus continues to be efficient, safe and beautiful for our students, faculty and staff. Among these improvements and renovations, AQ will:

  • Replace the HVAC heating and cooling system in the Wegman Napier Science Center
  • Convert our highest electric lighted areas to LED technology (main hallways, main lobby, cafeteria, library, student union, field house, and Wegman Napier Gymnasium).
  • Purchase new classroom desks
  • Install a ramp in the lobby for delivery access to the cafeteria
  • Seal and stripe the parking lot
  • Strip, repaint and seal the main Wegman Napier Gym floor
  • Enhance curb appeal (i.e. removing dead trees)

To assist with the LED conversion, AQ has partnered with NYSERTA and New York State, which offer a program that will subsidize 50% of the construction buildout. In addition to being environmentally friendly, LED lighting provides better lighting, is more cost effective and will save on future electric costs.

And still, after investing $900,000 in these capital projects, AQ will have over $200,000 of title funds left to use for other technology and safety upgrades on campus, and plans to subsidize from the endowment $1.2 million next year – in the form of scholarships and financial aid – to assist families with tuition.

We are so fortunate to have alumni support from families like Phil and Ann Wegman and their children, as well as the support of our Board of Trustees who have made these capital projects possible. Investing in our school is an investment in our students and employees that ensures the AQ experience continues to be exceptional.
