Mock Crash Demonstrates Consequences of Drunk Driving
Juniors and seniors at took part in a dramatic and authentic presentation of the events that occur following an alcohol-related motor vehicle accident on Friday, May 4.

The presentation, staged by the Rochester Fire Department, the Rochester Police Department, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, Rural Metro Ambulance, and the Vay-Schleich and Meeson Funeral Home, was part of Prom Promise, an initiative to raise awareness about the dangers and consequences of drunk and distracted driving.

“By participating in this mock crash we hope that our students realize the possible consequences of their actions and make good choices, especially around prom and graduation season when there is an increased danger for young drivers,” said Aquinas health teacher and Prom Promise coordinator Brittany Passero.

Aquinas junior, Maddy Campbell – one of the four students who acted in Friday’s mock crash, recognizes the importance of her participation in the event. “I definitely think watching this will impact someone’s decision to drink and drive or get into a car with someone who has been drinking,” she said. Due to the graphic nature of the mock crash, counseling was provided for students during and after the presentation.

While the mock crash was only viewed by juniors and seniors, all high school students in grades 9-12 attended a presentation given by trauma nurses from Strong Memorial Hospital about the dangers of drunk and distracted driving.

Aquinas would like to thank Rochester City Fire Marshal Steve Morgan '75 and Monroe County Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Resch who helped coordinate the mock crash, as well as all of the first responders who participated.
