National Signing Day 2023

Two of Aquinas Institute’s most gifted senior athletes signed national letters of intent to play collegiate sports at a ceremony held on Wednesday, February 1, 2023. We would like to congratulate both Gianna Leonardi and Sienna Hinchcliffe on their accomplishments and look forward to watching their continued success in college.

Gianna Leonardi has committed to Frostburg State University in Maryland to play Division II Women’s Lacrosse.

Gianna’s love of the game began at the age of five when she first picked up a lacrosse stick. As a five-year starter on the AQ girl’s varsity lacrosse team, Gianna’s talent as an attacker has been instrumental to the program’s success. Gianna was a 2019 first team and all-independent league selection and she was recognized again in 2021 as an All Greater Rochester and all independent league selection. In addition to playing for the Li’l Irish, Gianna has played 10 years of travel lacrosse – seven of which have been played with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

Gianna has always taken her studies seriously and throughout her time at Aquinas, has consistently been a principal’s list and honor roll student, and was named a Spring Scholar Athlete in 2022. She is a Richard J. Pilliter ‘63 Endowed Memorial Scholarship recipient, which is awarded annually to a student-athlete who exhibits excellence in academics, compassion for others, commitment to excellence, and love for Aquinas.

Outside of her academics and lacrosse, Gianna enjoys giving back to the community and has been a volunteer at Holy Childhood and Pine Brook Elementary school in Greece.

Gianna plans to major in nursing at Frostburg.

Sienna Hinchcliffe has committed to Akron University in Ohio to play Division I Women’s Lacrosse.

As a five-year member of the AQ girls varsity lacrosse team, Sienna has earned numerous athletic awards. In 2019, as an 8th grader, she was the only girls lacrosse player in Aquinas history to be named to the All-State team being selected to the sixth team. In 2021, she was the first girl’s lacrosse player at Aquinas to be named All-Greater Rochester Super 16, and has been an All-Greater Rochester Honorable mention each year since 7th grade. Sienna has also been a five-year All-Independent first team selection for the Private Parochial League. In 2021 and 2022, Sienna was named to the All-Tournament team for Class D. In the fall of 2021, US Lacrosse recognized Sienna as a player to watch on the Rising Stars list for juniors being recruited.

Among other lacrosse accolades, Sienna was named Rookie of the Year in 7th grade where she led the team in total points and broke the assist record in a season with 55. She has also been named Offensive Player of the Year and MVP of her high school team during her 8th and 10th grade seasons.

Sienna has proven to be one of the top scorers and all-around players in Section V, finishing in the top five in goal scoring each season since her 8th grade year. In 2021, she was the leading scorer in all of Section V with 76 goals. Sienna has also finished in the top five in Section V each year in the following categories:  total points, draw control, and caused turnovers. In 2021, Sienna finished the season as the #2 player in all of Section V in total points with 114. Sienna’s career totals have her climbing the section five rankings in goals and points, where she is currently at 260 career goals and 401 points. In addition to Aquinas, Sienna has been a member of the Monster Elite travel team that competed nationally in the lacrosse travel circuit.

Sienna is a three-sport athlete who has also participated in basketball and volleyball. In volleyball, she was a starter on the varsity team for the last four seasons and was named to the All-Private parochial league in 2021 and 2022. Sienna was named team MVP in 2021, helping to lead them to a 36-4 record in the last two years and a spot in the Class C championship, where they were the #1 seed this past fall. Sienna has participated in varsity basketball since 8th grade when she was called up mid-season. She continued to play varsity as a 9th grader. Sienna sat out her sophomore and junior years, but returned this season to play her senior year.

Sienna is proud to have been named a captain in all three sports she has participated in at Aquinas. She has earned 14 letters throughout her athletic career while maintaining a 90 GPA.

Sienna has been part of the Sisters of Saint Joseph Woman’s Leadership Program at Aquinas and has also been involved with Breaking Barriers; an organization that helps special needs children learn that there are no limitations in what you can do through the game of lacrosse.

Sienna looks forward to continuing her athletic success at the University of Akron where she will major in Business.
