Aquinas Names New Boys Basketball Head Coach

The 2021 All-Greater Rochester Boys’ Basketball Coach of the Year has been named the new head boys’ basketball coach at The Aquinas Institute.

Jeffrey LaFave will take over the reins of the tradition-rich Li’l Irish boys’ basketball program.  This past season, he led the Gates-Chili Spartans to the Class AA Section V Championship and along with being selected AGR Coach of the Year, he was also the Monroe County Division I Coach of the Year.

“I am so excited to welcome Coach LaFave as the new head coach of the boys’ basketball program,” Aquinas Athletic Director Anthony Bianchi said. “He has a proven track record on the court, but he also embodies the values we teach here at Aquinas. Jeff’s passion for the game and his dedication to helping student athletes develop their playing skills, as well as their character, will be an asset to this program. Jeff will be a wonderful role model for our players and I look forward to seeing him in action.”

Coach LaFave brings over 15 years of coaching experience to Aquinas. Before leading Gates-Chili, he coached at School of the Arts (SOTA) in Rochester, where he was the assistant coach for the 2014-2015 SOTA team that was Section V A2 Champions.

Prior to coaching at the high school level, LaFave spent over a decade as head coach of the Gates-Chili Junior Spartans travel basketball team.

“My primary goal right now is to come in and get to know the kids,” said Coach LaFave of his new position. “I want to re-establish Aquinas as one of the premiere basketball programs in Section V and look forward to working with the Aquinas community and keeping up with the excellence and tradition that was here long before me.”
