Middle School Students Volunteer During Annual Service Day

On Thursday, May 23rd, 250 Aquinas Middle School students visited 14 different sites throughout the Rochester community to lend a helping hand as part of the annual AQMS Service Day.

Sites included: Asbury First Methodist, Ascension Church, Cameron Community Ministries, Foodlink, House of Mercy, Mary's Place, Nazareth Elementary, Saint Joseph House of Hospitality, Saint Joseph Neighborhood Center, Saints Peter and Paul Church, Sojourner Home, Veterans Outreach Center, YMCA Camp Arrowhead, and YMCA Camp Bayview.

“The annual Middle School Service Day is a true testament to God's Spirit and love at work in the lives of our students and the community,” said Michelle Daniels, who teaches 7th and 8th grade religion and coordinates the Service Day. “This helps our students foster a positive attitude toward service and encourages them to get out of their comfort zones, work collaboratively, and be willing to do what is necessary to get the job done.”

Each 6th, 7th and 8th grade participant had a unique experience that they shared afterward in a written reflection. Here are just a few of those reflections.

I learned that people really do care for the community and try to do the best for everyone, and that by doing service, we are spreading God's love.”

“I liked making a difference. I helped people that I am probably never going to see, but they will benefit from what I did today.”

“We serve others because we are all on this earth together and need to be there for each other and help one another out.”

“I learned that people do not always choose their paths. Some things just happen in life. These people were so kind and though life hadn't done them any favors, they still had so much love to give. I believe that deep down everyone is the same. We are all made in God's image and likeness, therefore, we should help those who are less fortunate/need it more.”

“I think when you are doing service it makes you feel closer to God.”
