Myers '19 Attends Mini Medical School

Preparing for college and career
Exploring your interests and career options is an excellent way to prepare for college, and it’s something that Victoria Myers ’19 knows plenty about.

She recently took part in Mini Medical School, one of the University of Rochester’s highly selective Pre-College Programs for high school students interested in pursuing careers in the medical field. The three-week experience provided Victoria with a firsthand look at the rigors of being a med student through research labs, rotations, and service learning.

As one of only 30 high school students to earn this opportunity, Victoria took classes in anatomy and physiology, neurology/psychiatry, and public health. In addition, she learned to take vital signs, how to suture, took part in simulation exercises, toured the Emergency Department, and shadowed physicians.

Victoria described Mini Medical School as “an amazing experience.” Besides the numerous organ dissections, she said she really enjoyed her time shadowing a thoracic surgeon. “At first I thought I would be watching the surgery from a viewing room, but instead, I was actually in the operating room and saw the procedure, which was done using probes,” said Victoria. “I also got to see a tumor biopsy and a heart surgery – both of which were done laparoscopically.”

Back here at Aquinas, Victoria has been preparing herself for the rigors of college and med school with a number of AP courses, as well as calculus and physics this year. She is also currently enrolled in the University of Rochester’s Academic STEP Program – another career development opportunity for high school students interested in medicine, which she attends one Saturday a month during the school year.
