Parks '20 Completes Summer Business Program at Syracuse University

Develops skills in entrepreneurship, management, communications and professional readiness
Aquinas junior, Nia Parks, recently completed a two-week intensive summer college program designed to develop valuable skills that will one day help her succeed in business as an entrepreneur or corporate innovator.

The program, Launching a Business: Strategic Leadership & Innovation, was taught at Syracuse University by instructors from the school’s Blackstone LaunchPad – a resource for entrepreneurs that has launched over 350 ventures and raised over $3 million in investment capital since 2016.

From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, Nia took part in small group discussions, guest lectures, and online and hands-on learning tools with her peers and instructors that focused on the key areas of entrepreneurship, management, communications and professional readiness.

Reflecting on what she learned through the program Nia said, “There is a lot more that goes into a business than people think.” One of those key aspects is teamwork, which for the self-proclaimed introvert, is something she’s working on. “This summer college program and the people I met there helped me open up more,” said Nia. Through the group exercises, she learned more about her own capabilities, and believes now that she can do anything she puts her mind to.

“My future aspirations are to launch a business that deals with hair products because it’s a multi-billion dollar industry,” noted Nia. “Right now I am interested in learning as much as possible regarding customer service and day-to-day business operations.”

Here at Aquinas, Nia is looking forward to building on the skills she learned this summer by enrolling in business courses and joining DECA – an extra-curricular club that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for success in college and careers.
