45 Young Women Visit Women’s Rights National Historical Park

SSJ Women’s Leadership Program Hosts Annual Trip
Each year, the SSJ Women’s Leadership program sponsors its members to learn more about a woman or women who have left an indelible mark in history and on whose shoulders we stand. In the past, trips have included the Susan B. Anthony House in Rochester and the Harriet Tubman home in Auburn, but this year, to celebrate the anniversary of women’s voting rights in New York State, 45 members of the SSJ Women’s Leadership program visited the Women’s Rights National Historical Park in Seneca Falls.

While there, the group was given a guided tour of the museum and spent time interacting with the other exhibits. The most meaningful part of the trip however, was the visit to Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s home, which felt even more meaningful after having Dr. Melinda Grube – an Elizabeth Cady Stanton reenactor – visit Aquinas back in March (click here to read more about her visit). One of the young women described getting “chills” on the tour of Stanton’s home after what she learned from Dr. Grube about Stanton and the impact she had on women and women’s rights.

Sr. Elaine Englert SSJ, Director of the Women’s Leadership Program, points to an excerpt from one of the museum’s brochures as one we must reinforce:

Today…the fight for equality is waged on many fronts: women are seeking political influence, better education, health reform. The demands echo those of the movement throughout its history. In 1848 Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott and others claimed on behalf of American women “all the rights and privileges which belong to them as citizens.” What would the reformers from Seneca Falls do today to contribute toward a future of equality? What will you do?
