Celebrating Diverse Cultures

International Week at AQ
Aquinas’ international student program has seen continual growth year after year and we’re proud to celebrate the diverse cultures it brings together. New this school year, is Aquinas’ participation in a 12-week exchange program in which we welcomed students from Spain, Germany and France. From March 19-23, Aquinas celebrated International Week, which was a chance for our 40+ international students to teach others more about their cultures.

To kick off the week’s events, representatives from International Club were interviewed at Kumbaya about what a typical school day looks like for them. We learned that many of our international students end their days much later than what we’re accustomed to here in the United States – staying in the classroom until 7:00, 8:00 or even 9:00 p.m. some days.

On Tuesday, international students set up a booth during the lunch periods. Anyone who stopped by could have their name written in Arabic, Korean and Chinese - the native languages of many of our international students. The booth also included information about the home countries of our international students and traditional snacks for American students to try.

Wednesday was Heritage Day. Our international students wore special shirts boasting the flags of their countries.

Students in introduction to Catholicism took on a small project on Thursday and created a board that read, "All human beings are created in the image and likeness of God. All human beings deserve to be treated with respect and dignity." The collaboration was written in English, Chinese and German.

Friday was all about fun with an after school trip to Terrace Gardens for some bowling. The international students who participated returned to AQ afterward to indulge in Korean food, which was familiar to some and new to many others in the group.
