Leaders in the Making

Members from Aquinas’ Executive Council and other student leaders from Aquinas recently took part in the 30th Annual New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities Conference in Albany.

The main objective of the conference is to connect students from all over the state to create an environment of idea sharing, and networking and team building opportunities to enhance the student activities program at each student’s respective school. Students collaborate on topics that include fundraising, community service, and project planning. The conference is also geared toward giving attendees the tools to combat prejudice, bullying, substance abuse, depression, and other challenges they face as adolescents.

In the spirit of idea sharing, seniors Cam Cecere and Jack Steger ran a round table discussion at the conference regarding Kumbaya – the student-run assembly that happens each Monday morning at Aquinas. Kumbaya is a time for the entire school to come together for prayer, the Pledge of Allegiance, general announcements, and share accomplishments. Students from other schools were able to ask Cam and Jack about Kumbaya and how they might be able to implement a similar program at their own school.

“The conference talked a lot about becoming a better version of you,” noted Jack Steger, who has had the opportunity to attend the conference two years in a row. “They encouraged you to identify what we, as leaders, can contribute to Aquinas, and in our own lives.”

Funding for the annual conference is provided by the Leadership Fund at Aquinas. Thank you to all who have supported this fund and have afforded Aquinas students the opportunity to grow as leaders.
