National Signing Day 2020

Four Aquinas students commit to Division I universities
Four of Aquinas Institute’s most gifted senior athletes signed national letters of intent to play Division collegiate sports at a ceremony held on Wednesday, February 5. The student-athletes included Nia Williams-Matthews, Trevor Brake, Tyson Foster, and Steve Mahar.

Nia Williams-Matthews will attend Youngtown State University to continue her education and pursue a Division I track and field career.

Nia has been a standout in her sport, working hard and continually breaking school and personal records. In 2018, Nia earned a sectional championship as a member of the 4x100 relay team, which went on to earn 4th place in states. That same season, Nia was a USA Track and Field 3rd Place National Champion in the Long Jump, and 4th place National Champion in Triple Jump. These accomplishments earned her an All-Greater Rochester Honorable Mention in 2018.

The following season, Nia continued to excel in track and field, earning sectional championship titles in the long jump, triple jump, 100 meter dash, and the 4x100 relay. At the state championships, Nia earned second place in the long jump and triple jump, and secured a first place title in the 4x100 relay.

Trevor Brake will attend the University of Maine, where he will play Division I football for the Black Bears.

Trevor has been an asset to the Li’l Irish football team playing at long snapper, guard, and center. He has started in every regular season, sectional and championship game, playing a total of forty high school football games with a two-year varsity team record of 21-3-0.

Trevor’s talent and team mentality served the Li’l Irish well. He is proud to have won the 2018 Class AA New York State Football Championship, the 2018 Class AA Section V Title, and to have been an Eddie Meath “All Star Game” invitee in 2019.

Additionally, Trevor was captain of special teams, and a Hammer Kicking Academy National Top 40 invitee for three consecutive years in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Of the 40 invitees, Trevor consistently finished as a Top 12 National Snapper.

Tyson Foster will attend the University at Albany this fall to study Communications and play Division I football.

Tyson’s full athletic scholarship comes after a successful high school football career. He was a four-year varsity starter, who helped his team advance to three sectional title games and two sectional title wins.

In 2018, Tyson and the Li’l Irish went on to win the Class AA State Football Championship. In addition to the state title, Tyson earned Most Valuable Offensive Lineman for his contributions in that State Championship Final.

Tyson, who was an All-Greater Rochester selection in 2018, was honored to be selected for first team All-Greater Rochester and first team Federation for Monroe County in 2019. In addition, Tyson was also included in the 2018 and 2019 All State Selections. Tyson proudly served as team captain his senior year, and was honored to be invited to the 2019 Eddie Meath All Star Game.

Tyson has earned multiple coach’s awards over the years including: Offensive Lineman of the Year, The Ironman Award, and the MVP award in 2018, which he shared with his offensive line brothers.

Steve Mahar will attend Syracuse University to play football with the Division I Orange.

As a member of the Aquinas Li’l Irish football team, Steve was a three-year varsity starter and earned a spot as team captain his senior year.

Throughout his high school career, the tight end earned a number of accolades for his contributions on the field. Steve was a two-time Democrat & Chronicle All-Greater Rochester selection, which included first-team honors in 2019. He was also recognized as a member of the All Monroe County, and All-State Football teams for the 2019 season. He is the winner of two Section V Championships, as well as the 2018 Class AA State Championship. In addition, Steve is also a PrepStar All-East Region honoree.
