Aquinas Senior Colm “CJ” Flaherty ’26 to Receive Prestigious Black Lion Award

The Aquinas Institute of Rochester is proud to announce that senior Colm “CJ” Flaherty ’26 has been selected as a recipient of the 2026 Black Lion Award.

Presented in honor of Major Don Holleder ‘52 and the legacy of the Black Lions of the 28th Infantry Regiment, the award recognizes individuals who embody exceptional leadership, selflessness, character, and commitment to others: Qualities that CJ exemplifies in every aspect of his life.

“CJ is, without question, the best leader I have had the honor to coach,” said Varsity Football Coach Billy Harmon, who nominated him for the award. “He possesses all the qualities of a true leader—self-sacrifice, heart, intelligence, kindness, and the ability to adapt and elevate those around him.”

A three-year starter on the Varsity Football team, CJ served as the team’s leading tackler this past season while also taking on the responsibility of calling defensive signals from his linebacker position. His versatility extended to the offensive side of the ball, where he contributed as a blocking back and running back. More than his athletic performance, CJ’s energy, enthusiasm, and work ethic set the tone for his teammates and established him as a role model for younger players. Beyond his impact on the AQ football team, CJ is also a member of the baseball and hockey programs.

But this award goes beyond athletics. CJ is deeply involved in student clubs and activities as well as the broader Aquinas community. He is an active member of the National Honor Society (NHS), Student Council, Core Team, Diversity Club, Irish Heritage Club, and the St. Thomas Aquinas Club. His commitment to service is equally impressive, volunteering his time with organizations such as the Rochester Police Foundation, Golisano Children’s Hospital, and numerous fundraising initiatives, including “Erin’s Army,” which raises awareness and support for organ donation.

CJ’s dedication to serving others is rooted in his strong family foundation. He comes from a close-knit family that has instilled in him the values of compassion, humility, and hard work; values that are evident in all that he does. For more than a decade, his mother, Molly, has organized numerous fundraising efforts each year, and CJ has grown up volunteering at every one of them.

With a legacy of outstanding Black Lion recipients before him, CJ joins a distinguished group of Aquinas students who have demonstrated excellence in leadership and service. His impact on the Aquinas community is lasting, and his future is undoubtedly bright.
