Aquinas Diversity Club Visits New York State Capitol

On Wednesday, February 4, 2026, the Aquinas Institute of Rochester Diversity Club took learning beyond the classroom with a meaningful and inspiring trip to Albany. The experience offered students a firsthand look at civic leadership, public service, and the importance of diverse voices in government.

Students spent the day at the New York State Capitol meeting with Assembly members from both political parties, who shared how collaboration across differences is essential to serving communities effectively. In particular, students connected with members of the Greater Rochester delegation, who emphasized that despite party differences, working together for the good of the Rochester region remains a shared priority.

The group also heard from leaders of the Black, Asian, and Hispanic Caucus, as well as representatives from New York City and Long Island. Through engaging presentations and thoughtful question-and-answer sessions, students learned how government functions, what inspired these leaders to seek elected office, and how they are working to support education, childcare, and healthcare across New York State. One especially interactive session focused on the educational system, artificial intelligence, and its impact on critical thinking.

During the visit, the Diversity Club attended an Assembly session where they were proudly introduced on the Assembly floor by Assemblywoman and Aquinas parent Sarah Clark P’23, ’25 & ’28, who graciously hosted the group. Students also enjoyed a guided tour of the Capitol led by one of the Capitol’s historians, gaining insight into the building’s rich history and significance.

Assemblywoman Clark later shared her reflections on the visit, saying:

“This week, I had the pleasure of welcoming students from The Aquinas Institute of Rochester Diversity Club to the Capitol. What a joy to spend the day with such thoughtful and engaged students. Thank you to all my Assembly colleagues and a special shout-out to guest and AQ alum Ms. Yversha Roman ’02, Monroe County Legislator, District 26, for sharing your stories, passions, priorities, and the importance of diverse voices in government. As a proud #MomSquad member, I love talking with our next generation of leaders!”
