The Beauty & Peace of Monastic Prayer

Students visit Abbey of the Genesee
On October 27, 22 seniors in the Aquinas Catholic Spirituality class went on a field trip to the Abbey of the Genesee in Piffard, NY. This Trappist Abbey is known to many people in our area for their delicious Monk’s Bread, which they make and sell to sustain their monastery.

The Cistercian monks have been in Piffard since 1951, and their simple way of following God’s call is both ancient and beautiful. The students heard about the life of the monks from Fr. Isaac, and were given the opportunity to ask questions. Students then joined the monks for their midday prayer in the Church.

While the day was not an official retreat day for the students, it was certainly more than just a learning experience for them. It provided an opportunity to connect with God and experience the beauty and peace of monastic prayer. It was a trip that many will remember.
