Two years ago, the Aquinas Institute of Rochester expanded its role as a leader in Catholic high school education in Rochester to include 7th and 8th grade students. The Aquinas Junior High School (AQJH) opened in September 2008 with 167 students.
Tonight, the first class to complete two years in the junior high school will attend a moving up ceremony in their honor. Ted Mancini, AQJH director, describes the milestone as a celebration both of the work that has brought the students to this point and of the journey that they are continuing.
More than 200 students have enrolled in AQJH for the upcoming school year, a sign of the strength of Catholic education in the Rochester area. "Parents are impressed with the academic challenges and extra-curricular opportunities offered to 7th and 8th graders in area Catholic schools," said Aquinas Admissions Director, Joseph Knapp. "Many families choose AQJH because we tailor both the learning and extra-curricular environments to the specific needs of junior high students."
In fact, AQJH students benefit through honors level coursework and can earn high school credit in Fine Arts, language, math and science. Many also participate in the theatre and sports programs, providing opportunities to explore their interests in an environment that helps them navigate the social and emotional challenges of adolescence.
Following the success of the opening of the junior high school, Aquinas recently announced a new partnership with Nazareth Hall Elementary school. The initiative will provide families with a seamless pre-k through 12 Catholic school option across two neighboring campuses.
In the fall, Nazareth Hall Elementary students will start school in the Nazareth campus on Lake Avenue with access to new technology, as well as separate library, cafeteria, gymnasium and auditorium facilities. More than 100 students previously enrolled at Nazareth Middle School and Nazareth Academy will attend Aquinas next year. "We're excited about the possibilities available to families as a result of our partnership with Sisters of St. Joseph and Nazareth Elementary School," said Mike Daley, Aquinas president. "Both schools are known to have family friendly atmospheres and rich traditions that enhance student learning. With the expanded facilities available to students at each campus, we are able provide a new, unique option in Catholic school education."
